• This English translation is done from scatch mainly based on the Chinese manga, and partially (especially special names and terms) from original Japanese version.  It is then reviewed and compared with the original Japanese manga.  Chinese version is usually very close to the original Japanese version with minimal modifications needed mainly due to little cultural difference.  Names and special terms are based on the Japanese manga and Japanese names are kept in the translation.

• Some of the Japanese names in kanji used in the Manga are not in the dialogue and therefore not romanized.  Those that are not mentioned in the Anime are romanized by myself to my best knowledge.  If you know an official romanization for them, please let me know.

• Grammar and sentence structure may not be smooth since I try to translate every word and make as little modification as possible to hopefully keep the original meanings.

• Punctuation marks, exclamations (e.g., Ahh…, eh, etc.), and honorifics (e.g., san, sama, chan, etc.) are kept the way they were in the original version so it might look a little odd when the sentences are translated into English.

• Translations format: Quotations marks are used on dialogues.  Italics are used on thoughts and background signs translations.  [] Brackets are used for minor dialogues made by people in the background.  Spaces between lines are used to separate between different cells in the manga.  Most of the background sounds are not translated except those that give significant meanings to the story.

• Yurika (Auntie Yurika): Utena's aunt (“Yurika oba-san”, oba-san means aunt). “Yuri” is the Japanese name of the flower, Lily. And “ka” means flower.  Another way of translating the name would be Aunt Lily.  Lily belongs to the family Liliaceae.

• Kaidou: Utena's friend in the old school.  Kaidou is also a plant name in Japanese.  The official name in English is Malus Halliana, a kind of crabapple.  Malus Halliana belongs to the family Rosaceae.

• Peropero-kun:  The nickname for the mysterious person who saved the young Utena and licked her tears.  “Peropero” means licking.

• Wakaouji Aoi: Aunt Yuri's friend.  "Waka" means "like", and "ouji" means "prince".  “Aoi” is the Japanese name for the flower Hollyhock.  The official name is Alcea rosea, belongs to the Malvaceae family.

• Seiran Middle School: Utena’s old school.  "Seiran" could means mountain wind.  Middle school can also be called "junior high school".  Another way to romanize the name could be “Aoarashi”.

• Houou-shi (Houou City): The city where Ohtori Academy is located.  "Houou" means the mystical phoenix bird.  It could be translated as “Phoenix City”.  "Houou" is made up of 2 kanji. The first kanji is the same as the one for "Ohtori" (or Outori), meaning the male phoenix bird.  The second kanji means the female phoenix bird.  I don't think it is a real city in Japan since the only occasion where Houou City was mentioned was in Shoujo Kakumei Utena Sega game during my research.

• Olanda:  It is Portuguese for the Holland kingdom, i.e., the Netherlands.

• Ohtori Academy: The full Japanese name is “Shi Ritsu Outori Gakuen”, meaning Pheonix Private Academy.  Senior division, intermediate division, and elementary division can be translated to senior high school, junior high school, and elementary school respectively.

• Kendo (or Kendou): Swordmenship, a traditional Japanese fighting art.

• Anshii (aka Anthy):  The original Japanese katakana spelling used in the manga is actually "Anshi-", with a hyphen, meaning a long "i" sound.  The official spelling in English alphabets is "Anthy", which is a Greek word. Therefore if you try to pronounced it in the English or Japanese way, it will not be how her name is supposed to be in the story.  A Greek friend of mine, whose name is "Anthi", told me it is pronounced as "an-thee" in Greek with the stress on "thee" instead of "an" (as how it would be pronounced in English), and the meaning of "Anthy" in Greek is "blosom".  As you can see, all the characters' names share a floral or plant theme.  I personally prefers using "Anshii" with the double "i" for the long "i" sound to match how her name is actually pronounced according to the original Japanese katakana.

• Birthday on June 29, Cancer.  Born in Tokyo.  Blood type B.
• In 1982, she began her manga career in the spring edition of CORONET by "Sword and Mademoiselle".  She is now working for manga magazines CHAO and PETIT.
• Looks like "Anshii" when she is working.  She wears apron and glasses.  When she goes out, she wears shorts, like Utena (how can that be possible?).  In terms of pet, she likes a cat that looks like ChuChu.
